Here you can rent a canoe or whisper boat to explore the area. Moreover, the old fortified town of Steenwijk is just a stone's throw away and is easily reached by bicycle. A visit to the interesting museum "De Proefkolonie", located in the Drenthe village of Frederiksoord, is definitely worthwhile.
